HAMMAM

The performance directed by Javiera Peón-Veiga is inspired by the traditional practices of hot water baths and proposes an immersive experience of collective purge. In an environment full of steam, the audience is invited to move freely to create, together with the performer Claudio Muñoz, a community ritual of cleansing the body and mind. The choreography goes through the stages of the “hammam”, popularly known as the “Turkish bath”: heat, massage, exfoliation, washing, and relaxation.

The show investigates bathing as a collective phenomenon of purification in which the intimate sphere and the public space intersect. Blurring the boundaries between inner and outer, the body is a permeable organism that pours, absorbs and is crossed by distinct forces of information and waste. In the process, steam and sound function as environmental phenomena and tactile means capable of vibrating bodies.

The project is a multidisciplinary creative practice and explores the potential of steam and sound to affect bodies and environments. The research crosses dance, sound art, performance, and writing, cultivating actions that allow connecting the human to an interdependent ecosystem, in which body and environment are one, enabling the act of being in and out at the same time.
