The phrase “beauty is incidental” appears as one of the instructions at the beginning of the fourth movement of the “Sonata for Solo Viola Opus 25 nº 1”, by the German composer Paul Hindemith (1895-1963). The text, however, could belong to the expressionist choreographer Dore Hoyer (1911-1967), author of the dance cycle “Human Affections”. The works, composed of five short, pure and expressive solos, subjectively address the consequences of totalitarian governments experienced by both.
Based in France, the transmasculine Brazilian artist Pol Pi, who has been working with Hoyer’s dance for six years, proposes a dialogue between her works and Hindemith’s through letters written by both. A delicate trio is woven by words, music and movement, showing how much art and politics are connected.
The show also addresses the Brazilian political situation of the last four years, under the government of Jair Bolsonaro. At each session, the artist invites Brazilian performers, whose careers have been marked by political issues in recent times, to share the stage with him.
