The performative experiment provides an encounter with the city and its urban inscriptions. The performers Marcia de Aquino and Gê Viana go out into the streets to embody graffiti: their bodies turn into devices, in an attempt to compose a dance. Tensioning the body, the artists record, in their actions, the urban modes of resistance, their deviations, maps and codes painted in the public space.
The work arose from questioning the nature of graffiti and the way these codes interact with the looks of those who observe them. The idea is to map messages on the surface of the city, connecting marginalized written codes and open bodies to a performative state. The performance promotes the diversity of urban graphics and the countless possibilities of registering them through the body, breaking with the perception of urban space as an area devoid of aesthetic fruition.
The performance rescues what is invisible in the city by giving visibility to images and social processes placed at the margins of society. Thus, understanding and researching graffiti – chosen for its differences, similarities and its memories and political symbology concerning the place – becomes a way to potentiate urban urgencies.
